In Due Time 03:55
In due time I'll meet my maker In good time I'll rest my bones But for now I'm gonna hold my head high Ain't no grave gonna keep me home I've been up in that commonwealth in fall I've been down to walk them presidential halls Whether blue sky hanging high over LA Or the remnants of the flood from yesterday You don't climb a wall that you built yourself Keep your friends and your neighbors out You just spin the wheel and hop on for the ride There's a river rolling 'round the bend Upstream, downtown, ain't no end Follow me now, friend you can't go wrong Now you stop and wonder where it went The money's gone and time's all spent Better change your living for the good I've been up in that commonwealth in fall I've been down to walk them presidential halls Whether blue sky hanging high over LA Or the remnants of the flood from yesterday

One more row of corn to hoe, little darling And I think we'll call it a night Too little from the fields again, little darling And I know you and me will be alright And I'll take you back to that place Where I first saw that back road smile And there'll be a day when that face Can erase the lines a while Three crows watching from the fence, little darling Do they know where we're going? Forever on the tracks again, little darling Wherever our love is flowing One more row of corn to hoe, little darling And I think we'll call it a night Two little from the fields again, little darling And I know you and me will be alright

An old man once had told me Son, don't stick around Don't pass your time under barroom lights Just a'dreaming in this town You'll end up on the shelf Dusty, old, and gray Or you might end like a bottle Broke and empty in this way So don't take me home I ain't coming back There's a life somewhere Further down the track That shows me that place Where the river runs Where skies of blue Have just begun Now the leaves fall on the backporch Rain won't ever end The stars won't shine and the wind just wines Alone without a friend I think about the home road And how it let me down Stuck behind and lonesome Ain't a hope here to be found I remember on the night When all was said and done I'd hum a tune then drink a few And head out on the run City lights behind Highway sign again Well there ain't a place where a restless man Can rest his weary head

There's a deer over here out walking Stepping so light and low When we cross the river then he starts talking Want to hear him tell me some more First you catch a trout in a creek bed Gonna fry him nice and slow Then you catch my heart in a weekend Want to hear him tell me some more Cuckoo by my window And there's a spruce branch on the floor And there ain't no good reason For walking out the door Rainy days are the ones I leave And walk my road to hoe But sunny skies, they make me believe him Want to hear him tell me some more Stubbed my toe on a branch out dancing Looking for I don't know Could it be I get another chance now? Want to hear him tell me some more

Maggie Lee 03:16
Misery and sweet Maggie Lee Spent all of their days so happily She'd pick out some daisies and then pick a fight She'd kick out her man every Saturday night Now she walks all alone down in old Jackson Square Smile at the broken hearts everywhere No man will know love from sweet Maggie Lee Because a bird needs two wings to be free Sweet Maggie Lee, she gave me a smile Told me she loved me but it's been a while Coming back home was all she could do To break my heart anyways and probably yours too Mississippi, you're an old river boat The roads and the rivers, they keep me afloat And all of the boys want to give me a ring But my hearts full of song and I don't need a thing

I'm going to the station Look upon the board If the train ain't here It's somewhere on the road If I'd a'minded What Mama said I'd still be sleeping In Mama's bed Honey all night long Baby all night long Got the Richmond Blues Honey all night long Me being young And foolish too I left my home On account of you I'd rather be dead And in my grave Than in this town Living this old way Ain't got no woman Ain't got no kin Ain't got nobody To be bothered with So if I live And I don't get killed I'll make my home In Louisville

Folk Heroes 04:27
The eighteenth of June had come way too soon As the red clay had started to break And the dust they allowed met the sweat on their brow And on the homes they were trying to make With cars on the track and the close on their backs They headed for the grape vines of west With nothing to find but the passage of time And the memories of the place they loved best And so it goes with the worries and woes That all us folk heroes must end As John Henry swore that the children he bore Wouldn't pick up a hammer like him Sweet Liza Jane she would play in the rain As her daddy set wood on the stove And the locals down town they would mix in the crowd With strangers who ramble and rove Just like Darling Cory we've all got our stories Though some may escape history And by the words of Leadbelly, John Hurt and Blind Willie How it was is how it will be Some pigs in a pen have stood taller than men Some men may sink lower than mud Like that cruel Stack O'Lee on his last killing spree Who's life we'll remember in blood You can shout from the hills or the brick-laden mills Or the fields where the green corn stands tall That a man's just a man and he does what he can And all who shall rise has to fall

about

We recorded these seven songs while wrapped around an array of microphones in a cozy barn studio in Ashfield, MA on January 21st, 2018. Engineer Tom Mahnken was responsible for engineering, editing, mixing and of course, all the good vibes. With the exception of a single, overdubbed fiddle solo on the title track, all songs were performed and recorded live. We were accompanied by our good friend Adam Schultz whose harmony vocals we enlisted on both In Due Time and Folk Heroes.
